Most important life lessons from kata

These are arguably the two most important life lesson I've learned from kata:

1. Of course it is stating the obvious to mention the self-defense applications of kata, and how training in kata is an important aspect of training in fighting. However, some modern martial artists find this sort of statement controversial, even though it is the long held tradition of the martial arts, and the very purpose of kata.

2. Closely related to my first point, but with more far-reaching life application, is the focus and concentration that one gains from training in kata. A lot of parents enroll their children in martial arts classes for this very benefit. The mental training is of value to us as adults also.

In order to train effectively in kata, whether it is in the dojo, at home, or for tournament competition, requires an intense focus and concentration. I tell my students that they are "strengthening their mental muscles" when they concentrate on their training.

If kata is so important, why don't they teach it in the military?

Excellent question! In fact, it was dealt with, as I recall, in a recent issue of Black Belt Magazine.

My take on this: the military already has a number of methods that it uses to teach focus, concentration, self-discipline, etc. However, the students who come to me, and to the typical martial arts instructor, aren't in the military, nor do they tend to be looking for military-style training. They still need, at least in my opinion, the benefits of training in kata.

That's not to say that members of the military could not benefit from kata training as well!
